Another Spring Flute Event

I spoke with Stuart Hill about an upcoming annual event this April called Flute Spring.

Jan Kirlew is the host organizer.
Her computer is down for at least another week, and she has been unable
to send out further information on the annual Flute Spring, held in

Lebanon, NJ each year. This year's event will be April 19-22, 2007.
She needs to put in a deposit on the facility, so please send your
checks to her address (Jan Kirlew, PO Box 20573, Roanoke, VA 24018)
The weekend is $170, towel and linens is $10 more. You can send her
email at jkirlew@att.net - which she may receive when she gets her
computer back.

Stuarts comment on the event is "For anyone not aware of this event, it is a very casual and enjoyable event, held in a religious camp facilities, catered and a real blast." Thanks Stuart for the news.

Another highly recommended event in Musical Echoes in ft Walton Beach Florida. Dates for this year are April 27, 28, 29 2007 and you can see the performer line up at:

Call RCCAC to register for the workshop 304-637-2355

While far from traditional - this workshop will give everyone a fun-damental understanding of how the instrument works and everyone will take home a nice sounding Native American Style flute to play.

This workshop will be the same day as our MAY circle meeting May 12 from 1-3pm at RCCAC

First Nation people across the continent played the flute for it beautiful sound. This three hour workshop will have you building and playing your own first flute from PVC pipe in the key of A, suitable for any size hands. We’ll discuss the history of the instrument and teach you how to get started making your own tunes. Using PVC flute kits and simple tools that Bob has put together - learn to use a drill press, files and a tuner to get the instrument to play. You’ll gain an appreciation of the instrument and take one home to enjoy.

About Bob:
Bob Willasch is the founder of the Maryland Flute Circle in Timonium and has been making and playing flutes for over 12 years. Bob came to the flute from a love of woodworking and Native culture and has participated in building historic reproductions of tall ships and sailing vessels since 1985. Bob was inspired and given pointers in the construction of the Native American Flute by gifted Native American Flute makers such as Hawk LittleJohn, Butch Hall, and Barry Higgins. He has taught Native American Flute making and played workshops all over the country. Bob found he could reach many youth through the Native American Flute, by showing them the positive things in their lives this instrument can bring. Bob is multi talented as a woodwind player and studies the history of world flutes.

Review of Timber Flute Concert 3/3

Well folks it was a wonderful performance.
Wendell Dobbs, Linda Wolfersheim, & Elizabeth Ford playing wooden flutes
Julio Alves playing classical guitar
Robert Psurny Jr. singing tenor

This was a two hour extravaganza of music attended by several from our flute circle, and many regional residents on yet another cold & snowy evening in Elkins. The flute playing was my favorite by bias but the many arrangements and composers gave me a new appreciation and education in 18th century music and technique. This event raised funds for the First Annual Timber Flute Festival which will be held June 24-29 in Elkins this summer. Wendell Dobbs, Colin St. Martin, and Grey Larsen will be instructors for this event and the instruments of Flute maker & local resident, John Gallagher will be featured. Hearing some of this type of playing Saturday night definitely whets your appetite for what is in store this summer.

Stay tuned for details but the WV NAF Circle has agreed to do a demonstration of Native Style Flute at this summers event and we are excited to share the instrument and learn from one another music.

You can learn more about Timber Flute Festival from the link at your right.
We will meet Saturday March 10th from 1-3pm in the great hall at Randolph County Community Arts Center. We hope to see you there, bring any instrument you'd like!
